TV sizes: dimensions and a screen size calculator
A TV’s size is its screen diagonal, not its width. Compare the visible screen in inches or centimeters, see how much bigger an upgrade really is, then check the exact model’s housing and stand before you buy.
Compare screen sizes before you measure the furniture
The number on the box is the screen diagonal. Width, height and screen area tell you more about the change you will see. Start with your current screen, then try the size you are considering.
TV size chart: width and height in inches and centimeters
A nominal 65-inch 16:9 screen is about 56.7 inches wide and 31.9 inches high. The complete TV is larger. Use this chart to understand screen size, then use the exact manufacturer dimensions to check a cabinet or wall opening.

How much bigger is a 65-inch TV than a 55-inch TV?
At the same shape, a 65-inch screen has about 39.7% more screen area than a 55-inch screen. It is roughly 8.7 inches wider and 4.9 inches taller. The diagonal increases by only 18.2%, which makes the visual upgrade easy to underestimate.
A 75-inch screen adds about 33.1% more area over 65 inches. A 77-inch OLED and a 75-inch LCD are different size classes; compare their actual housings and picture performance, rather than treating either as an exact substitute. Explore the 55-inch, 65-inch, 75-inch and 77-inch buying guides.
Will the TV fit your wall, cabinet and delivery route?
Wall or opening
Measure usable width and height. Match the exact TV-only dimensions, mounting pattern, bracket limits and the maker’s ventilation guidance. Leave room to reach connections and route cables.
TV stand or cabinet
Use dimensions with the stand fitted. Check the feet’s spacing and front-to-back depth, the furniture’s load limit and soundbar clearance. A narrow center stand does not make a wide screen fit inside an alcove.
Getting it into the room
Check the carton dimensions, entrances, stairs and turns with the retailer. Packaging can be much larger than the screen. Confirm delivery and installation arrangements before ordering a very large TV.
For a real example with exact US chassis dimensions and stand weight, see the 77-inch LG C5 Full Piqelo Review. For very large screens, use the 98 versus 100-inch buying guide.
What size TV should you get for your viewing distance?
Measure from your seated eyes to the proposed screen, then tape the screen’s width and height on the wall. Sit in your normal seat and check the full picture, subtitles and your most frequent games. Try it from side seats too. The same TV can feel relaxed for a movie and too wide for a fast game when you sit close.
There is no single distance that suits everyone. Screen resolution, eyesight, content quality and how much of your view you want the picture to fill all matter. Once you know the space that works, use TV Finder to compare your size and budget with room light and main use. A larger diagonal alone does not improve contrast, reflections or low-quality broadcasts.
Common TV measurement questions
Does a 65-inch TV measure 65 inches across?
No. The 65 inches describes the screen’s corner-to-corner diagonal. A nominal 16:9 screen is about 56.7 inches wide before its frame. Check the exact TV’s width for furniture planning.
Do the dimensions include the stand and bezel?
The chart and calculator describe visible-screen geometry only. A manufacturer’s TV-only dimensions include the housing; stand-inclusive dimensions add the fitted base or feet. Shipping dimensions describe the carton.
Can I use this table for an ultrawide or curved monitor?
Use the exact monitor specifications. This tool assumes a flat 16:9 television screen. A different aspect ratio or curved screen needs a different measurement model.
Sources and calculation
Screen geometry is calculated, rather than copied from a different model’s specifications: width = diagonal × 16 ÷ √337; height = diagonal × 9 ÷ √337; one inch = 2.54 cm. Screen-area changes compare the squares of the diagonals. Values are rounded to one decimal place.
