How Piqelo researches products
A recommendation should be explainable, evidence-backed and independent from whoever pays a commission.
Piqelo uses one canonical final Rating contract across product categories: 50% expert scenario score, 25% owner experience, 15% reliability and 10% value. What counts inside the expert scenario score changes with the product category. Piqelo fit and research confidence stay separate from the final Rating.
What drives the final Rating
These are fixed platform weights. A new final Piqelo Rating is published only when all four evidence layers are supported; a missing component is never silently replaced by zero or redistributed over the other components. If a Rating was already published, its last published score remains visible as “Last published · revalidating” until the current method is complete again or the old Rating is explicitly invalidated with evidence. Value uses the effective US market price rather than MSRP: the lowest current verified offer, or the last verified offer price until a new offer appears. V5 keeps 75% of the existing market-value model and reserves 25% of Value for Capability-for-Price: whether the TV includes the refresh, HDMI 2.1, VRR, HDR-format and practical features expected among similarly priced TVs of the same size. The underlying market-value model combines same-size performance per dollar, price-class performance, screen-area-adjusted value and verified deal quality. Inside that 65%, Piqelo compares every expert dimension with TVs of the same size and roughly the same live price (normally ±20%, widened only when the peer set is too small), then combines that price-class performance with performance per dollar. Screen area uses the square of the diagonal, so a 77-inch TV is correctly recognized as roughly 40% larger in picture area than a 65-inch TV. Price never changes the pure Gaming, Daylight, Dark Room or Sports performance score. In the Finder, a separate Piqelo fit score reflects the visitor’s selected use case, budget and requirements. It can remain available while the final Piqelo Rating is Pending, but it is never presented as the fixed product rating. The budget reference is capped by the meaningful upper end of the chosen screen-size market, so an unusually high budget does not invent a price tier that does not exist.
Measured first, claimed second
Independent exact-size lab measurements are kept separate from manufacturer specifications. Manufacturer claims can explain capabilities, but they do not replace independent testing. Evidence from a different screen size is never silently presented as an exact-size measurement.
We show uncertainty
New products can appear before there is enough evidence for a definitive rating. Confidence reflects how mature the evidence is and remains visible separately. Piqelo’s Choice is reserved for the #1 recommendation in a defined context only when the final Piqelo Rating is at least 85/100, personal Piqelo fit is at least 85/100, research confidence is at least 80%, there are at least two independent expert sources and at least 30 independent owner reviews, the critical evidence is complete and no high-confidence contradiction remains unresolved.
Volume matters
Owner feedback is weighted with review volume rather than treating a handful of reviews as equal to thousands. Piqelo also separates independent retailer/community owner pools from manufacturer-syndicated reviews. Syndicated reviews can add context, but they are down-weighted and do not satisfy the independent-owner threshold for Piqelo’s Choice. Reliability evidence looks for recurring real-world problems rather than isolated anecdotes.
The recommendation cannot be bought
Affiliate commission never changes a Piqelo score, ranking, Piqelo’s Choice award or retailer order. Verified retailer offers are ordered by price, not commission. Affiliate links are labelled and technically marked as sponsored.
Independent and syndicated reviews are not the same
Retailer and community owner pools can contribute to Owner Experience when their origin is independent enough to be useful. Reviews syndicated from a manufacturer are labelled separately, receive substantially less weight, and cannot by themselves make a model eligible for Piqelo’s Choice.
No evidence means no pretend score
A new product can still appear in the catalog while evidence is developing. Piqelo shows what is known, but the final Piqelo Rating and Piqelo’s Choice remain Pending until the four required components and award evidence thresholds are met.
Different jobs get different scores
Gaming uses modern input lag, 4K refresh rate, pixel response when measured, VRR range, HDMI 2.1 capability, HDR gaming and game features. These scenario ratings are pure performance scores and are never boosted because a TV is cheap. Daylight emphasizes brightness, reflections, viewing angle and ambient-room contrast. Dark room emphasizes black level/contrast evidence, HDR tone mapping, color accuracy, near-black handling, motion and processing. Sports emphasizes motion, processing, brightness, viewing angle and reflections.
Excellent should mean excellent
Piqelo V5 calibrates every scored performance variable against its actual position in the current 2026 TV market before the components are combined. The benchmark targets a broad, interpretable distribution: the market median sits around 78, the upper quartile around 87, the top 10% around 94 and 95+ is deliberately rare. Scenario scores also use weak-link penalties, so one excellent metric cannot hide a major limitation such as 60 Hz gaming, poor reflections or weak motion handling. Editorial scores are normalized against each publication’s own scoring range so a generous five-star outlet is not automatically stronger than a stricter reviewer.
Useful first. Searchable second.
Piqelo creates review, comparison and buying-guide pages from the same underlying research engine. They are designed to answer a real purchase question, not to create thousands of keyword variations with no added value.
